About the Gleadows

John Ward Gleadow, a young lawyer recently admitted to the Bar in England decided to emigrate on the sailing ship Andromeda to Van Diemen’s Land in 1825. Amongst the other passengers was Diana Harriet Kearton, the daughter of a London Solicitor. They arrived in Hobart Town on 11 September 1825, and married about seven months later on 3 April 1826. They moved to Launceston soon afterwards where they settled and he established the first legal practice in northernTasmania.

Today our family is much more dispersed and the Bicentenary of John and Diana’s arrival will be a wonderful opportunity for us all to commemorate the occasion and remember together all that has happened in the intervening two centuries.
