John Ward Gleadow and Diana Harriet Kearton left Gravesend on the River Thames in Kent on 28th April 1825 on the sailing ship Andromeda, bound for Hobart Town in Van Diemen’s Land. After 133 days at sea, exactly 19 weeks, they made their first landfall at Birches Bay, 40 km south of Hobart, on 8th September. They had to anchor there for three days because they could not make headway against a strong wind blowing down the Derwent estuary. They finally made it to Hobart Town on 11th September 1825, after 136 days.
On this page you can see their progress week by week as they approached this new land which would be their home for the next 55 years.
